Rather dull images, very oversized cards
By Ella Kwint
As a rule, I try to avoid postcard 'books'; postcard books either have a perforated system that's prone to rips & tears, or they are bound by a glue-like substance. These have the latter and I was able to successfully remove all 21 cards without a single tear. However, the rubbery residue that remains on each card is...awful. Every card, not unlike a cat, has to be individually "groomed" to remove the strands and balls of glue. With considerable effort, you can roll or slice most of it off but I find this pretty annoying (and it make the tops of all 21 cards really rough, shiny, and unattractive).
While I love that less common kitties like a LaPerm and Selkirk Rex get some love, the illustrations themselves aren't too inspiring. The illustrator did a great job on about half the cards and the other half are kinda 'off' in some fashion. The eyes of some these cats...scare me. The cards are quite plain: there's an illustration on a white background w/ the breed printed in a small blue font... and that's it. The simplicity is refreshing but as I'm a Postcrosser with lots of requests for cats, I can't say this set will be the first I'd grab for any wow or charm factor. The whole set feels more like flash cards; these would be excellent to teach a child/Jr. show handler the differences in breeds. If you're after non cutesy cats, this is the set for you.
The backside of the card is completely matte and all-inks friendly, contains a field for postage, a small blurb about the cat, and 3 itty bitty pre-printed lines for an address. There's also 3 small lines printed on the bottom left that shout out the publishing house/illustrator/web address. Each card measures in at a whopping 4-3/4" by 6-1/2" so cannot be mailed with just a 35 cent postcard stamp.
These are a resounding 'meh' for me...and as I paid full retail on the day of my purchase, I can't say the value here on Amazon is stellar.
