A Good, Quick-Reading Introduction to People Wanting to Raise Interesting Pets Other Than Dogs or Cats. Intriguing & Fun to Read
By Bill Anderson
Length: Print, 195 pages; not available as an audiobook, but a book on this topic is needed at Amazon.com as either a downloadable mp3 store, or on CD or at Audible as a spoken book. Doing so would likely also increase its exposure to the public and increase its sales rank.
Target Audience/Genre: This nonfiction how-to guide, or handbook, is written for animal lovers in search of unusual, or exotic, pets that they can nurture and study.
What was the Amazon Rank on the date this review was published? 243,449.
Is this a book that I can read without having to read others first? Yes
Are there a lot of typos/misspellings, grammatical errors or other editing failures?
Is this a fast, easy read or is it more of a leisure read?
What sort of language does this writer use to amplify the points made?
My biggest pleasure or disappointment? Although there is some mention of reptiles, including one article on the Bearded Dragon, there is nothing regarding pond turtles, tortoises, or box turtles. Also, there are a few more typos and editing errors than I would prefer. Not enough to prevent me purchasing it, or recommending it, but more than there should be in an otherwise outstanding publication.
Also disappointing was the lack of any illustrations or photographs. I would love to see an update in the future that includes quality photographs.
Note that I borrowed Exotic Pets through my Kindle Unlimited account, in part due to the price tag. In my opinion, this is a must-read for anybody considering exotic pets in their home. This is a very useful introduction. Further, if the author includes photographs in the future, I would gladly part with six or seven dollars. Otherwise, I think this book price is just a tad high.
I’ve included a small excerpt below, so readers can peruse the style of presentation utilized by the author.
To acquaint potential readers with this writer’s writing style and pacing, I have included two excerpts. One is regarding Sugar Gliders as these are a pet I would love to someday take care of.
The second excerpt is regarding an exotic that stymies the imagination – the Hissing Cockroach.
EXCERPTS
Sugar Gliders as Pets
Excerpt 1
Exotic pet sugar gliders are a gentle, social marsupial from Southern Australia. Other marsupials include opossums, wallabies, koala, and kangaroos. Sugar gliders glide from tree to tree using a membrane that stretches from their ankles to their wrists. The sugar glider's body size averages around 6 - 7 ½ inches and have a long tail, about the same length as their body. The sugar glider does make an outstanding exotic pet for the right person. The person that will learn everything about their care before acquiring a sugar glider, and follow through with that care!
I think the name sugar from the sugar glider's name is because they are such sweet and affectionate animals. However, in reality the name was from the sugar's gliders diet. They like sweet saps, gums, and pollen from trees and plants. They also need protein and obtain the protein from small insects, vertebrates and arthropods.
Sugar gliders are a social animal living in the wild in colonies of usually six to up to 40 animals. Since they are a social animal, they should not be raised as a single pet. They must be raise in a colony. A single sugar glider is not an option!
Sugar gliders are affectionate and very intelligent. They are wonderful exotic pets. Just like any other exotic pet, they have some very special needs. Suggie owners need to know what those needs are!
Sugar gliders love human attention and they love to play. You need to bond with the little ones when you bring them home. Since they sleep in the daytime, you can bond with them by letting them sleep in your pocket or even a fanny pact, facing front, mainly so you do not forget, and sit on it! Sugar gliders will form very strong bonds with their owners. Scent is important to sugar gliders; they use it in the wild to recognize their groups. Scent has influence in the bonding process as well. Wearing gloves will defeat your purpose in the bonding process. Play with them in the evening and at night. They love hide and go seek. They enjoy "finger" wrestling with you. I love it when I come home at night, open their cage and they all converge on you, excited to see you! I call them my Velcro babies when they spot you they cling to you like Velcro!
Please buy them from a reputable breeder.. I recommend starting with a baby since they do form much stronger bonds with you.
How to care for an exotic pet Sugar Glider - .
Sugar gliders are a social animal and should not be raised alone. You must have more than one. They are a marsupial much like a opossum. They rear their young in pouches like a kangaroo. Sugar gliders can be adopted from sugar glider rescues. In fact, many people are unprepared when they purchase a sugar glider and many gliders do end up in rescues!

Madagascar Hissing Cockroach
Insect exotic pets such as the pet Madagascar Hissing Cockroach are particularly popular. They are fascinating animals. A lot of people enjoy these amazing creatures as pets. They are not like the more common cockroaches found in dwellings, they spend their time naturally on the forest floors not in homes! Unless of course, a person should decide to have a hisser as a pet but keep in mind they are excellent climbers, they however, do not fly.
Hissers do make good beginner insects because of their durable outer shell; they are hardy insects. They are also quite docile, don't move very fast, and are easy to handle. If you want to start a responsible child out with an insect pet, this would be a good starting point. Making sure you supervise because all critters deserve the best of care. Hissers would rather hide when frightened, they do not bite. Keep in mind insects are not disposable pets.
Gently pick them up. They will be holding on to whatever they are sitting on. Scoop them up from underneath making sure their claws are unattached from whatever they are standing on so that you don't hurt their little legs!
Madagascar Hissing Cockroach (Gromphadorhina portentosa) just one of the many species of unusual life found only on the island of Madagascar, which is a country off the coast of Africa. They reach an impressive size of 2-3 inches; about one inch wide at full growth. The male more portentous with their horns (pronotum). They are a wingless roach. Bearing live young after the young hatch from an egg sac inside of the mother, meaning they give birth to live young (more accurately living young) after the eggs hatch.
They get their name from the grand hissing noise they make. This hissing noise is mostly made during mating rituals and fights between male hissers the victorious often making the most hissing noises making a person wonder if it isn't the noise of the conqueror after many display hisses during the fight. Males are territorial. They may also hiss when they are startled. It is not unheard of to hear many members of a colony of hissers making this hissing noise at the same time. So perhaps, this is one of the many mysteries humans just don't entirely understand.
They make the hissing sound when they squeeze air through the body part spiracles (breathing tubes) found in front of the abdomen. The hissing noise can be quite loud; audible up to 12 feet away.
The hissing cockroach is found primarily in the rich vegetation of forest living between rotting logs and other debris eating rotting fruits, vegetation, rotting animals and insects. They are said to be a herbivore but this isn't true they are nature's perfect composters.
Hissing cockroaches are an invertebrate and go through growth cycles counted through each molting of their exoskeleton. They usually are capable of hissing when they reach maturity after their fourth molt.

Very Readable Exotic Animal Guide
By Connie Mistler Davidson
Several years ago, I read FERRETS: A Complete Guide, by Diana Geiger. So it was with great excitement that I saw her new book, Exotic Pets: Family Guide. It did not disappoint!
Reading a book about animals written by Diana Geiger is like having a fascinating conversation with a knowledgeable pet store owner. With her years of experience, she knows the right information to give to help the reader find their way through the maze of exotic pet ownership. Beyond, food, medical needs, and housing requirements, Diana Geiger will let you in on the special traits for each animal. And what a number of animals that she writes about! More than 40 animals are examined in detail. A family who is contemplating stepping into the world of exotic animal ownership can find authoritative facts in this easy-to-read book. Families who have kids who are interested in animals can buy this book to satisfy that curiosity. With her breezy, conversational style, Diana Geiger is a good read for any child who reads at the fifth grade level or above.
A reader might wonder why I gave the book 4 stars, instead of 5. Honestly, the book would have benefited from a final editorial pass. There are small editing errors that made me pause briefly, but then I read on, since the book is so compelling. The editing errors are not enough to disturb the book's overall quality. I did want to mention them, although they were a minor part of the book.
I give this book an enthusiastic 4 stars, and I would have given it 4 ½. if that had been possible. If you are into learning about animals or having a good reference about exotic animals, this book is for you! I read the Kindle edition.
