About the Author
British-born ROB RACHOWIECKI is an award-winning guidebook author and active member of the Society of American Travel Writers, with a Masters Degree in Ecology. He has traveled extensively and frequently throughout Peru since his first visit in 1982. Rob has written numerous books about Peru and works there as an adventure travel guide, leading treks in the high Andes and cruises on the upper Amazon. When not on the road, he makes his home in the American Southwest.
VANCE JACOBS is an award-winning lifestyle and portrait photographer and filmmaker based in San Francisco. His work has taken him around the world to 40+ countries. When not on assignment, Jacobs can be found competing in an Ironman Distance Triathlon, marathon or adventure race.

Excellent book

This is an amazing book. It gives detailed information about the entire country, the culture, the history, and the people. The pictures are breathtaking; the text is thorough; the colors are vibrant; the maps are beautiful and detailed; and the sidebars are full of interesting facts. If you are planning a trip to Peru I recommend this book. If you are interested in the country you will be enthralled by this book, and probably planning a trip there soon.

Read Before Booking Your Journey ...

This full-color, glossy paged guide is ideal for the sophisticated traveler. National Geographic differs from many guides in that it doesn't focus on best beaches or best "night clubs." Instead, it remains squarely centered on the arts, nature, history, and culture. Therefore, these are slightly more geared toward childless travelers (in that there are extremely strenuous trails/hikes, wine tastings, and even advanced weaving classes that are not, obviously, geared toward little ones).
If this is your first trip to Peru, do read the "Travelwise" section. This is especial true to those with disabilities (since Peru rarely has/makes accommodations).
Highly recommended reading before booking your journey.

a pleasant read, lacks substantial travel information and maps

This is a well written book, easy to read and concise. The only problem I had was that there were a limited number of recommendations for hotels and restaurants. It was also missing some other travel details, like how to get there as well as details on entrance fees and what you get for the price. Some of the distances were not precise enough as well as bus/train stations numbers and addresses, museum's hours of operation and fees. So I had to spend a significant time of my vacation to do additional research, and whenever I trusted this book I ended up being somewhat misled. I think the problem with this travel guide as it is with most of them is that the information is not first hand (there is not an actual person who stayed in the hotel writing the review) and even though this is a recent publication some of the info is outdated. One thing I like about the book is that it has a 'must see' list attached to each location. This way I was enabled to be selective about what I should visit and what I can just skip.
