About the Author
CHRISTOPHER SOMERVILLE is one of Britain's best-known travel writers, with some 25 books to his name including the best-selling National Geographic Traveler: Great Britain. His love affair with Ireland was kindled on his first trip, an 800-mile walk through the rugged, romantic west. He has since written four books about the island, and he returns there whenever he can to see old friends, walk the mountains and coasts, and play traditional music.

Far from the best Irish tour book...

This book is a merely okay guide to Ireland, a lot of sizzle and little steak. The list of hotels and restaurants is pretty limited, and the better restaurants in Galway and Dingle, our two favorite destinations, aren't even mentioned. There are three music pubs in Doolin, not two -- for some reason McDermott's is left out. And as for Taaffe's Pub having the best music in Galway, Tig Coili blows it out of the water. Of course, these are just opinions. But factually, the book falls short as well. For example, Yeats' tower, Thoor Ballylee, is listed as being open to the public. It hasn't been for years, although one can still walk around the outside. Also the Nora Barnacle House and Museum in Galway has been out of operation for several years as well -- tours are *not* available. These are things I know specifically, having learned in person last May. I can only imagine what other errors might be here. I think such errors come from not keeping the new editions up to date. This book tries to cover too much, and as a result, little is covered in detail. I'd recommend LONELY PLANET: IRELAND, a lengthy and comprehensive volume which would be of far more value to travelers in Ireland than this book.

Great reference!

I love this book and I know I will be pulling it out for reference many times. They mention in one of the blurbs about the book that it s a good book for those that travel. For some of us who are done with traveling, it will be a great reference for me. When reading these days, I love to pull out my atlas to find and follow where the characters are. This book has lots of great maps including for the bigger cities street maps. There is a map of the rail, bus, air and ferry routes in Ireland. Lots of colored pictures of the important places in Ireland with histories of each spot, county, city, etc. Now when I'm reading a book that takes place in Ireland, I will be able to look up exactly where the characters are and follow their travel routes. I'm hoping to get the chance to get more of these books for different countries. It will add so much to my knowledge when I read.

Would love to see the author return in the following editions with a coauthor, like a chef or historian or mariner or gardener or dramatist- you get the drift, adding someone with fresh eyes and a different perspective would have added a nice touch.
First off the guide is priceless in that it give PRACTICAL advice
Easy to read maps with places of interest highlighted
Cultural, historical & architectural locations to see
Author guided walking & driving tours
plus the usual directory of hotels, restaurants, and things to do (shopping and entertainment).
Nicely done and National G also has two web pages that really helped me, one you can find under the title search "Free Things to Do in Dublin" and the other "travel/countries/ireland-guide".
I recommend also picking up a copy of the author's 192 page AAA guide AAA Spiral Ireland (AAA Spiral Guides: Ireland) "full-color photos, and locator maps. The guide has over 200 pages of intimate details, insightful articles, and engaging anecdotes. Witty magazine articles provide an interesting perspective of an area's culture and history. The AAA Spiral Ireland guide details must-see stops and, for those with more time, special treasures that call for leisurely sightseeing. With recommendations for places to see, stay and shop and even the four most memorable views. Itineraries for a day or a week. Excursions, Walks and Tours, Transportation, cuisine, and more, Easy to use color-coded sections, A unique spiral binding."
The author is the real deal - 20 years ago I read his first title on Ireland "The road to Roaringwater: a walk down the west of Ireland": "In the spring of 1991, Christopher Somerville set out to walk the 700 miles from Malin Head, the northernmost point of Ireland, to Cape Clear Island in Roaringwater Bay, the southermost - through some of the loneliest, wildest and most beautiful country in Europe.
