Pretty good idea-guide if you're planning a trip to LA (in this resident's opinion)
By T. Scarillo
I've lived in LA for nearly seven years, so I probably could've used this book back when I first moved here (I had used the "Not For Tourists" guide, the edition which was larger and had a bit more info than this, to learn the landscape, as well as a now-out-of-print "moving to L.A." book). As I had a visitor in town a couple of weeks before I'm writing this review, I compared what I could/would plan off the top of my head in terms of what I wanted to show my friend, vs. what was in this book. The book does, in my opinion, pretty much capture what most visitors to L.A. would likely most be interested in taking in.
Overall, if you're planning a short (week or less) trip to L.A., this guide should pretty much suffice to kickstart some ideas. While the guide doesn't seem to hit every part of the city (skimpy on East L.A., and not a whole lot of love for The Valley, other than Burbank/Uni-City), it will point out most of the probable attractions you'll want to see in visiting our fair city, in a compact format that's a bit more portable and pleasing to the eye than a AAA guide. My main critiques of the guide are that while the day planners are admirable in attempting to suggest itineraries/sequences to hit to make the most of your time, they seem a little rushed (examples: suggesting a trip to the Getty, which closes at 5:30, in the late afternoon to avoid crowds, is pretty much going to ensure you don't see too much of the place - I'd say allow at least 3 to 4 hours, maybe starting around 1PM. Likewise, there is no such thing as a `quick peek' at Amoeba Music, if you are a hard-core music collector - it's the size of a warehouse. Allow a minimum of 2 to 3 hours for that one, and bring your wantlist. Do The Petersen and LACMA back to back - they're across the street from each other - and that's about 5 hours right there). There are some restaurant choices that are pretty solid, though Loteria gets a bunch of mentions and I'm not sure it's THAT good. Also, there are some omissions - one that comes to mind is that while they mentioned the Rose Bowl, they neglected to mention the massive flea market that takes place there on the 2nd Sunday of each month - there are people who schedule their LA visits to coincide with it (it's only a 20-30 min trip from most of the Valley and Hollywood) - great vintage shopping. I would like to hand out kudos for the guide's recommendation of The Hollywood Museum at the Max Factor building - the place is an underrated gem for true movie fans, and is way better than the tourist-trap museums down at H&H.

A fabulous book for fabulous people
By Andrew C Wheeler
(Note: I originally reviewed this book as compared with the very similar Frommer's Los Angeles Day by Day -- both books do a good job of giving an overview of LA activities in a pocket-sized format, but they would be more useful for different audiences.)
The Lonely Planet book has a similar form-factor to Frommer's: it's shorter (closer to the height of a mass-market), and both slightly thicker and deeper, with marginally thicker paper than Frommer's. Its inside-back-cover fold-out map has more density -- one side is mostly taken up by a listing of places, so it can function semi-independently from the book -- but lacks the large area maps Frommer's does. (Lonely Planet's map is also paper, and tears out from the book, while Frommer's is plasticized and sits in a clear plastic pocket in the back of that book.)
Lonely Planet is also clearly hipper than Frommer's is, from the open-shirted author photo of Adam Skolnick to its focus on neighborhoods (the trendier the better). It does have a quick "do this each day" section up front, possibly to compete with Frommer's, but the book is primarily organized geographically rather than by interest, starting with Hollywood and circling around to hit Beverly Hills, Downtown, Santa Monica, Burbank, and excursions to points further away.
Lonely Planet feels like it gives more space to shopping and nightlife -- again, aiming at a hipper crowd than Frommer's -- so visitors with those items high on their agenda will want to gravitate in this direction. It also is quite thorough in differentiating between the different strands of nightlife: old Hollywood, new Hollywood, LGBT, and so on -- to give the reader the best guidance as to exactly which trendy club she will be most comfortable in. But all that hip trendiness can make an older, stodgier, less shopping-obsessed reader -- your humble correspondent, for one example -- feel bored and out of place; this is not a guide for those who don't intend to make hitting boutiques and/or nightclubs a major part of their LA itinerary.
The design is bright and modern, with pastel headers and sidebars to organize sections, and lots of color photography -- as expected from Lonely Planet, it's entirely up-to-date in both tone and style. For readers who are equally up-to-date, this is the perfect guide to LA. (The rest of us may want something a bit more sedate.)

well-organized tour of the la area
By James LaMar
This guide is very good and is very readable. So many stories are set in the greater Los Angeles area, this book is helpful in following the movements of such characters and learning about the environments in which they are operating.
This book is also good for tourists or want-to-be-tourists who plan to visit the LA region. Good restaurants, sights and hotels are listed.
The topics are organized in a convenient, easy to find way.
I recommend it heartily.
