Pleasure and Profit: 100 Lessons for Building and Selling a Collection of Rare Coins
Longtime collector Robert W. Shippee dissects how, twenty years ago, he got serious about building a collection of rare coins, gradually and carefully assembled the Waccabuc Collection, and later sold its half cents through double eagles. He tells the story "warts and all" --- from creating a grand vision to the emotional rush of live auctions, the learning process, successful purchases, as well as duds and costly mistakes. Learn how he assembled and eventually sold his collection of 150 copper, nickel, silver, and gold coins for $1.5 million at public auction. The story includes Shippee's observations on acquisition strategies, storage choices, and disposition options, supplemented with commentary on grading services, auction houses, famous dealers, numismatic personalities, market valuations, and --- with candor that's rare these days --- his laid-bare financial results. His insight is humorous, wise and unflinching --- uniquely valuable for today's collector and investor. Q. David Bowers calls Pleasure and Profit One of the most useful books in American numismatics, and says It will change your buying strategies.

A Multimillionaire's Guide to Investing in Coins
By The Creative Investor
While not everybody has $1 million available to invest in coins, at the bargain price of $9.99, every person wanting to invest in coins needs to buy this book! The author clearly shares his experiences putting together a world class U.S. Type Coin collection in this well produced book. It is a vicarious fun read.
The author gives very balanced and thoughtful answers to the age old question, "Can you make money in coins?" One needs to read the book to understand how he did. His biggest winner was an early American gold coin bought for $18,418 and sold for $138,000 eight years later! Only a few well heeled collectors can dream of doing this and no other coin in his 138 lot collection came close. There were losses. He did not buy inexpensive coins. The biggest winners were bought prior to 2000 when coins were recovering from the disastrous 1989 coin investment period and moving up in value across the board. The collection was sold in 2007, a year before the explosion of our U.S. financial calamities. He negotiated an auction house commission. Today, the major auction houses routinely charge 17 1/2% to the buyer AND to the seller - a total of 35%. In the 1970's, the commission was a flat 20% to the seller and no buyer's commission.
While it's sad to think that you need $1 million to put together a worthwhile U.S. type collection, it's refreshing to see that even $1 million doesn't guarantee a huge profit. And of course, one can always go for a poor man's Type Collection - U.S. Commemorative coins - which he did not buy. I found interesting that his AU58 & MS64 coins showed the strongest appreciation. A testimony to his careful selections and counter to the common suggestion to buy the best you can afford.
Thank you, Bob Shippee, for writing your story.

Unique coin-collecting advice from an experienced hobbyist and investor.
By Dentuck
Call me biased! After all, I’m the publisher at Whitman Publishing, and I watched this book grow from a strong early-draft manuscript into the nicely finished 320 pages that you see before you. But even with that bias, I like to think I know a good book when I see it. I’ve read hundreds of numismatic guidebooks, references, encyclopedias, and catalogs over the course of my career. Not just browsed them, not just looked at their pretty pictures, but actually READ them, word for word, from the title page to the index. Robert Shippee’s “Pleasure and Profit” is a gem—the kind of book that longtime coin collectors read and say, “I wish I’d had a guide like this when I started collecting.”
Don’t just take my word for it. Steve Bishop, in the December 7, 2014, issue of “The E-Sylum” (online journal of the Numismatic Bibliomania Society) observes, “While most books on coin investing provide general advice applicable to rare coins in general, this one stands out by tailoring the lessons to specific coins, although many of the lessons may be generally applied.” He calls it “a worthy supplement” to Q. David Bowers’s “Expert’s Guide to Collecting and Investing in Rare Coins.”
Leonard Augsburger in the February 2015 issue of “The E-Gobrecht” (newsletter of the Liberty Seated Collectors Club) praises Shippee for being “brutally honest about both mistakes and successes,” calling this approach “refreshing as a collector’s view of the market.” Further along those lines, Augsburger says, “Let’s face it, most so-called ‘market information’ comes straight from dealers, who are incentivized to create any action at all, either on the buy or sell side.” Discussing one of Shippee’s lessons, Augsburger observes: “The book is full of such advice, and somehow it becomes more visceral when we are talking about actual coins bought and sold. One can pontificate on the overall market direction, but you make or lose money on individual coins, and this book analyzes over a hundred such deals.”
David Luftig in “The E-Sylum” (November 30, 2014), calls it, “All in all a very enjoyable clearly written book, which gives good advice to collectors at all levels.”
Will “Pleasure and Profit” (and its 100-plus lessons) save you from making any mistakes at all? No, and no book will; mistakes are part of the learning process as you become a seasoned coin collector. But by sharing 20-plus years of active experience and observation of the hobby and the markets, Bob Shippee will definitely make you a better, wiser collector and investor. As Q. David Bowers says in the book’s foreword, “If you collect rare coins, this is a Grand Tour you don’t want to miss.”

I'm glad I bought this book!
By Virginia Nottelmann
An informative work that highlights the different series of United States coins.
The lessons are backed up by real world experiences making them useful and relevant. The suggestions are offered from a collector's point of view and will be useful to numismatists both new and old as they build their own collections.
A nice reference work if your interests span several types of coins. The book delves into each different series without getting bogged down in any of them. A terrific read, Robert Shippee has a nice, easy-to-read style that is suitable for all ages.
