We were so excited when we got our new kitten. Achilles was the sweetest and cutest kitten that we had ever owned. He got along very well with our two female cats and was a loving kitten to both of us.
When he started to have extremely vague symptoms at the age of 6 months old, we weren't too alarmed. We simply kept an eye on him. When his symptoms continued to get worse, we felt that a trip to the vet was warranted. Little did we know that he had a fatal disease and that his time with us was growing shorter by the day.
Like many other cat owners whose cat's have faced this same fate, we had never heard of FIP. We learned that Feline Infectious Peritonitis is a virus that causes a myriad of symptoms, including the many vague symptoms that Achilles was exhibiting. We learned that this devastating disease, although relatively rare, often targets kittens. We learned that there is no cure and our Achilles would soon be an FIP statistic.
This book is designed to raise awareness of this horrific virus. The first chapter is told from the point of view of Achilles, the second chapter is told by me. The third chapter goes into more detail about FIP and dealing with the grief associated with losing an animal. The last two chapters contain questions and answers, as well as personal stories told by other cat owners.
If you are looking for a veterinary manual that explains FIP using scientific and medical terms, this is not the book for you. If you are looking for a book that goes into some detail, but is readable and understandable for the cat owner, this book may be for you. This book will give you a general overview of the virus.

FIP is a deadly disease - please help fight it!

I hope, if you are reading this review, you are doing so because you've heard about this disease but have no personal experience with it. The reality is, if you're reading, you are probably now a member of this exclusive club of other kitty owners who lives have been impacted by this deadly disease. If you're like me you are in the throes of grief - hating FIP with a passion rarely felt, and trying to come to grips with loosing a beloved family member. If you have (or had) a kitten or cat with FIP this book will give you a glimpse of others' experiences and you will come away feeling not alone in your loss. Sometimes it is that type of community that helps with healing - but I would encourage you to take up the banner to fight this disease that afflicts death to babies. I'm just one more story - but equally determined to do something to fight against this disease until a cure is found.
We adopted two boys from the animal shelter (a high kill facility) in December of 2014. One, Nemo, a orange tabby around 2-3 years old and the other, Henry, a white with gray tabby who was 6 months old. From the start Nemo and Henry were inseparable. Nemo taking on a "Daddy Cat" role - teaching Henry the ropes, grooming him, caring for him. I had never seen a male cat assume such a loving and supportive caregiver role. In any case Henry thrived. They were both happy and, we thought, healthy. Henry was always a huge cuddled. I choose him because when they opened the cage at the shelter he jumped into my arms and put his tiny paws around my neck and rubbed me continuously - marking me as his. At first, when we played with the boys we thought it strange that Henry seemed not to have the best balance. He would try to jump on things but 1/2 the time would not make it. He also always seemed to have an eye that he blinked a lot and was at half mast frequently. Other than that we noticed nothing out of the ordinary.
Two months later one day Henry seemed lethargic. He wouldn't eat or play and had a fever. The vet gave him an antibiotic and the fever seemed to go away. His blood work indicated only anemia (ruling out other diseases like mycoplasma)- and we had no cause for it. In my heart though I knew something was wrong. The vet was happy with the antibiotic and said as long as he was ok acting not to worry about the anemia. About one month later we noticed Henry having a hard time breathing. He had rapid respiration (50) and he seemed to be breathing very hard. We brought him in to his regular vet and she sent us to the emergency vet because the X-rays and ultrasound revealed a heavily fluid filled area surrounding his heart. She said this was not good and agreed that FIP or HCM were possibilities. The ER vet drained the fluid and confirmed that whatever we were dealing with, given the entirety of the symptoms, was most likely fatal. They said if it was HCM we could put him on some diuretics to help with fluid. We took him home - he spent time outside with us and loved it. He was given any food he wanted and he was loved nearly non stop every moment we were home. Henry seemed to do well for 4 days and then, on a Tuesday, we knew. When we got home he was laying on the floor with a far away look in his eyes. The kitten who lived to be picked up and cuddled did not want to be handled. His breathing was rough again. That night we did the hardest thing I've ever had to do - send him across the Rainbow Bridge.
It's been a week and the grief is unrelenting. I've lost many others (human and feline) but this loss has hit the hardest. Henry never lost weight and his coat was beautiful - shiny and thick - up until the end. Unlike many he had no fluid in his abdomen. His other blood work was fine. We need more people to learn about and help us fight this disease. Because it strikes at the most vulnerable population (kittens and older elderly cats) it is particularly cruel. Please - help us to find a cure and an understanding of this disease so no one else needs to suffer the pain of loss.

A must read for cat lovers!

Every cat owner should read this book. Being a cat lover and also an owner of a kitten that passed away from FIP, I thought this book was great! It is informative, heartwarming and unfortunately heartbreaking, but that is what FIP does. It breaks hearts. I am sharing my own story soon and hope that both Susannah and I can raise some money to help the Bria Fund fight this horrible disease! RIP Achilles and Kona. Our kitties need us to be their advocates.
